Day 283: Young Chicago Authors
I met some really cool people at UXXU 2011, one of those cool people is Kevin Coval, a poet who serves as the Artistic Director for Young Chicago Authors. I’ve heard about Young Chicago Authors before, but being at UXXU reminded me to find out more about their work. YCA is a great organization the works to empower Chicago’s youth to utilize creative writing and performance to boost self-esteem, creativity, and literacy. YCA also becomes a safe place for young people to develop their voice.
Young Chicago Authors transforms the lives of young people by cultivating their voices through writing, publication, and performance education. Young Chicago Authors encourages self-expression and literacy through creative writing, performance and publication. YCA provides student-centered, artist-led workshops free to youth ages 13-19 in schools and communities. Their process emphasizes artistic development, mentorship, and creating safe spaces where a young person’s life matters. They believe that through their words, young people can promote tolerance and remove barriers to transform their lives and society.
