Day 269: The Glass Slipper Project

Growing up with five sisters, there was a time when it seemed like my mother was buying homecoming and prom dresses all the time. Most of my sisters had to save money from their part-time jobs to buy their dresses and my mother would help cover the rest. It was funny to me to see how happy that one dress would make them, probably because we didn’t always have the nicest things, getting a new, pretty dress was like a receiving an award. While having a prom dress may seem trivial in comparison, to all the other areas of need in the world, a day of happiness for young girl in need can do wonders for self-esteem and confidence. So, today’s give goes to a grass-roots organization in Chicago that assists girls with financial need obtain a free dress for prom.

The Glass Slipper Project collects new and almost-new formal dresses and accessories and provides them, free of charge, to Chicago high school students who are unable to purchase their own prom attire. They distribute the dresses at Glass Slipper “boutiques,” where each student receives individual assistance from a volunteer “personal shopper” as she shops for the dress of her dreams. To date, Glass Slipper has helped more than 10,000 young women attend their proms in style!

Amount Donated: $5

*Glass Slipper Project welcomes donations of formal dresses, shoes, evening bags, jewelry and unused make-up and can use volunteers to help staff the boutiques.
