World Suicide Prevention Day

twloha:

Today is World Suicide Prevention Day, and during September 9 – 15, TWLOHA is participating in National Suicide Prevention Week. We asked you to join us by answering some key questions in our NSPW survey. These are questions we believe can guide the conversation about suicide and depression—not only this week, but year-round. For each day of NSPW, we’ll be sharing a new question and some of the responses we’ve received.

Global suicide rates have increased by 60 percent in the last 45 years—but those numbers can change. So, tell us…

WHY IS SUICIDE PREVENTION IMPORTANT TO YOU?

“It’s important to me for many reasons; because I believe every life matters, because I have empathy for anyone who feels suicide is the only solution, and because I believe in futures.”

“Suicide prevention is important to me because as a college student, I know that my fellow students are greatly at risk for depression and thoughts of suicide. I would be devastated to lose a single person.”

“My daughter died by suicide, and I would like to help save other families from this heartbreak.” – Elaine, 61

“It’s not only about preventing suicide, but also helping with depression and self-harm. The best way to prevent suicide is to treat the things that cause it.”

August Recap! + September Featured Charity!

August was a great month for Stand Up to Cancer! With your help and the lovely support of our anonymous donor CYPHER and State Farm’s Go To Bat Program, we collectively raised $2,861 for Stand Up To Cancer! That’s Super Amazing!

And now we have the opportunity to do it all over again!

Living Philanthropic is proud to announce that the featured charity for September 2011 is American Foundation for Suicide Prevention. I am also proud to announce that we have an anonymous matching donor (CYPHER) for this month who will be matching the first $1,000 in donations made to the Crowdrise Team page. Plus, there will also be a $1K donation from State Farm’s Go To Bat program!

This is an amazing opportunity to triple your impact, turn your $10 contribution into a $30 donation!

The American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (AFSP) was founded in 1987 by a group of experts on suicide  who wanted to create a organization to fund research in suicide prevention

Education and research about depression  and suicide are fundamental to the AFSP purpose. Grant awards are given to those involved in suicide research. A current campaign to increase suicide awareness is a public service announcement called “Suicide Shouldn’t be a Secret”. Annual walks called “Out of the Darkness” raise funds for suicide prevention efforts and research.

AFSP has a number of suicide prevention programs aimed at various populations such as teenagers, and college students, people in medical professions, and other high-risk groups. http://www.afsp.org

Living Philanthropic was founded in April 2010 as one man’s mission to give to charity everyday for a year. This mission is built on a belief that you don’t have to be rich in dollars to make a difference; you only need to be rich in spirit. After completing his 365 day mission, the spirit of giving everyday carries on through his friends and in his mission to continue his micro-philanthropy for a second year.
