Living Philanthropic: Give Anything, But Up!

As Year 2 of Living Philanthropic winds down over the next 11 days, I wanted to give a little update. In year 1, we banded together to raise $20K for 365+ charities. In year 2, we teamed up to raise another $32K for charity. Our total combined impact for the past 2 years of Living Philanthropic is $52,496! That’s an amazing number, but I want to say we are not done quite yet.

My personal motto is: Give Anything, but up.

Which means for continued success in anything you do, you have to keep giving anything you can, just don’t give up.

As I work to hash out the details of Year 3, we are going to continue the monthly featured charities, but I am working hard to get another program off the ground for year 3 of Living Philanthropic. More details to come soon.

I wanted to personally say thank you for all the support and drive you have shown over the past 2 years, your messages and generosity towards the greater good are a constant inspiration and our success is a collective one.

I would love to close out these 11 days in style, here are a couple ways you can help!

1. Spread the word. Share this blog, get your friends to like the Facebook page or follow on Twitter. If we can hit 5,000 likes and follows, it would help us spread the word in Year 3.

2. Pledge $11 (a dollar per each day left in March as of this post) to Bottom Line, the featured charity for March on Crowdrise. The first $1,000 in donations will be matched! http://crowdrise.com/lp-mar12

3. Submit a Guest Blog Post. After you make a donation, consider writing a guest blog post. http://bit.ly/lp-blogger

Stay Tuned for more information about Living Philanthropic: Year 3.

More about Living Philanthropic:

Actor and Director Carlo Garcia’s grassroots philanthropic mission to inspire others by making personal donations to hundreds of different charities is moving people nationwide.

Carlo Garcia is a regular guy with an extraordinary idea. In 2010 he chronicled his campaign to donate a small amount to a different charity each day for an entire year, titling the project Living Philanthropic. The overwhelming positive response led him to try the experiment for a second time, however, this year he is focusing on giving a large donation each month to a total of 12 non-profits. Garcia stresses that even a small donation of $5-$10 can make a large difference to those in need. He personally donated around $4,000 during his 365 day mission, but over $15,000 was donated by others who had been moved by his work and contributed on their own.

Through his personal blog, Garcia has encouraged his online followers to join in by donating to the organizations or giving back in non-monetary ways such as volunteering or donating goods. In regards to the future, as Garcia himself says, as long he inspires at least one person he will consider the project a success

Tips for the Everyday (micro)-Philanthropist

I have received many questions from people asking for tips on how to start their own everyday giving mission. I am extremely flattered by all the support and before I leave for Mexico, I wanted to share some tips for those who might want to make the Give Everyday philosophy a part of their New Year’s resolution. It can be daunting at times, but can be very rewarding and educational.

  1. Start locally. Take a look around your community and see what groups and organizations are working within your community to promote postive change. Find a handful of organizations that you would like to support and keep them on your short list.
  2. Start small. There is no need to break the bank or go broke for your giving mission. There is no such thing as a donation too small. If you are afraid that it won’t make an impact, take it from me, it will. Here is a suggestion that I will be utilizing for YEAR TWO: pick one organization and save up each daily donation in a jar and donate the contents to your charity of choice at the end of the month.
  3. Jar 2 Jar. Some parents might be interested in teaching charity and saving at the same time, so I recommend JAR 2 JAR. Take 2 jars or containers and label one Savings and the other Charity. Each day drop a quarter, $1, etc. in each jar. Then, deposit the savings and donate the charity portion at the end of the month or end of the year. It’s a great way to get the kids involved. My uncle Luis bought his first car from a 5 gallon water bottle of change he collected, it adds up.
  4. Vetting. It is important to be informed in your giving, it can be discouraging to find out a charity is not legit after your donation. The best solution is to do your research. Check out websites like CharityNavigator.Org, Charitywatch.org, Guidestar.org, and other watchdog sites. The more information you have, the more confident you can be about your donation. My other suggestion for vetting is volunteering. Volunteer a hour or two at the organization you want to contribute to and see what they are doing with the funds raised first hand. Give Smart, Give Confidently.
  5. Money isn’t Everything. While giving cash is a great way to help your favorite organization, donating goods or volunteering your time are excellent and recommended ways to help as well. So, on those days when $1 might be to much for your budget to give, consider donating some old clothes/toys/etc, or volunteering a hour or performing a random act of kindness. Instead of looking away from the homeless man asking you for change, smile and say “Good luck. I hope you have a good day.”
  6. The Great Opt-Out. After your donation, contact the organization and ask them to please remove you from their postal mailing campaigns. Politely let them know that you support their work, but would prefer they save the money spent on direct mail campaigns and be more green by sending email only.
  7. Get Social.  If you want to get your friends and family involved, consider starting up a fundraising project using a social giving site like Crowdrise, Razoo, First Giving, StayClassy among others! This is a great way to stimulate conversation and expand your impact.
  8. Give Anything, but Up. Even if you have to take some time off, don’t give up. The best thing about giving is that you can pick it back up at anytime. Stay positive and what you might think is too small, can cause a ripple and eventually create a large wave.

If you have any other questions or suggestions, please drop me a line. Also, if you start your own Give Everyday mission, please let me know, so I can follow you!

I wish everyone all the best in the new year. Happy Holidays!

Day 214: City Year

Today’s give goes out to an inspiring organization that challenges young people to volunteer a full year of service in their communities and across the world. Volunteerism can change the world, and City Year proves it with every new leader they challenge. And somehow the whole year thing appeals to me. :)

City Year unites young people of all backgrounds for a year of full-time service, giving them the skills and opportunities to change the world. As tutors, mentors and role models, these diverse young leaders help children stay in school and on track, and transform schools and communities across the United States, as well as through international affiliates in Johannesburg, South Africa and London, England. City Year corps members serve as tutors, mentors and role models to help students stay on track – and get back on track – to graduate.

By giving corps members the skills and opportunities to serve in schools and neighborhoods across the country, City Year seeks to:

• Help students and schools succeed
• Build stronger communities
• Break down social barriers
• Develop young leaders
• Foster active citizenship

Amount Donated: $38

Day 165: Chicago Cares

There are a number of ways that you can make a difference in your community, when you are unable to give financially, you can give something even more valuable to organizations in need. You can donate your time as a volunteer. I volunteer for a non-profit theatre company in Chicago. Many non-profits rely on volunteer staff to stay operational as they pursue their mission. Chicago Cares matches volunteers to the organizations that need the help the most. Check them out and if you leave in Chicago, why not sign up to make a difference an hour at a time!

Chicago Cares’ mission is to respond to the critical human service, educational and environmental needs of Chicago by creating, managing and leading effective and innovative volunteer service programs which foster the ethic of volunteerism, promote a sense of community and support their partnerships with community organizations.

Chicago Cares has created more than 275,000 opportunities for Chicagoans to give back to their community since 1991. Now you can join, Chicago Cares meets the city’s most pressing needs through volunteering! Simply complete the online orientation, submit your volunteer profile and review the 200 service projects we offer every month. Once you are a registered volunteer, you’ll be able to always find out about the latest projects through their monthly print and e-calendar and their weekly Hot Projects e-mail that notifies you of projects that need your help the most.

Amount Donated: $5
