Today, water resources are declining in quality and quantity in virtually every part of the world: More than a billion people are living without access to safe drinking water; California faces the most serious water emergency in its history; Australia is in the midst of an epic, 12-year-long drought-the first industrialized nation to deal with water scarcity on this scale.
Waterkeeper Alliance provides a way for communities to stand up for their right to clean water and for the wise and equitable use of water resources, both locally and globally.  The vision of the Waterkeeper movement is for fishable, swimmable and drinkable waterways worldwide.  Our belief is that the best way to achieve this vision is through the Waterkeeper method of grassroots advocacy.
Waterkeeper Alliance aspires to protect every major watershed around the world. We also continue to reach out and collaborate with other leading national and international environmental and public health organizations to serve the needs of our global network.
The growth of the Waterkeeper movement is a testament to the strength of our model. From the Great Lakes to the Gulf of Mexico, the Amazon to the Ganges, Waterkeeper Alliance has become a powerful voice for the world’s waters.

Day 224: The Samburu Project

Today, I’m spreading a little Crowdrise love, so my give goes to fellow Crowdriser Carol who has three projects, one of which is The Samburu Project, led by awesome crowdriser Chiara. There is nothing in the world like a glass of clean, refreshing water and in most areas of the world there really is nothing like that, most of the water available in these communities is unsafe to drink. I strongly support the organizations and people working hard to provide the resources needed to bring clean drinkable water to those in need. Clean water is the first step in eradicating deaths and illness caused by water-bourne diseases. This project makes me say H2YES!

The Samburu Project is a 501(3)(c) non-profit that collaborates with communities in developing countries to enhance the daily lives of men, women and children by providing resources that address immediate needs while promoting long term sustainability and self-sufficiency along with cultural integrity.

The Samburu Project’s current initiatives are aimed at providing easy access to clean, safe drinking water to communities throughout the Samburu District of Kenya. This is a community where the closest clean water is numerous miles away and often unsafe to drink. Only with clean water will it become possible to impact other aspects of community life including education, healthcare, income generation and women´s empowerment. With water, development happens.

Amount Donated: $20

To support The Samburu Project, please visit: http://www.thesamburuproject.org or donate to Carol’s Crowdrise Project.

Day 178: charity: water

Access to clean water is a basic human right and when nearly a billion people in this world do not have adequate access to clean water,  you know there is something to be done. Unsafe water leads to disease and death, most of which can be prevented through the building of fresh water wells in the areas with the greatest need. charity: water is a great organization raising funds and awareness to fight the cause. I recommend checkin out their site.

charity: water is a non-profit organization bringing clean and safe drinking water to people in developing nations.

Their mission:

It’s hard not to think about water today. In the western world, we face growing concerns about our stewardship of the world’s most precious resource. There’s talk of shortages, evidence of reservoirs and aquifers drying up, and of course, plenty of people who simply don’t care.

But forget about us.

Most of us have never really been thirsty. We’ve never had to leave our houses and walk 5 miles to fetch water. We simply turn on the tap, and water comes out. Clean. Yet there are a billion people on the planet who don’t have clean water.

It’s hard to imagine what a billion people looks like really, but one in eight might be easier. One in eight people in our world don’t have access to the most basic of human needs. Something we can’t imagine going 12 hours without.

Here, we’d like to introduce you to a few of those billion people. They are very real, and they need our help. They didn’t choose to be born into a village where the only source of water is a polluted swamp. And we didn’t choose to be born in a country where even the homeless have access to clean water and a toilet.

We invite you to put yourself in their shoes. Follow them on their daily journey. Carry 80 pounds of water in yellow fuel cans. Dig with their children in sand for water. Line up at a well and wait 8 hours for a turn.

Now, make a decision to help. We’re not offering grand solutions and billion dollar schemes, but instead, simple things that work. Things like freshwater wells, rainwater catchments and sand filters. For about $20 a person, we know how to help millions.

Start by helping one.

Amount Donated: $15

Day 89: World Hope International (via) Tipping Bucket

I started this mission with the idea that you don’t have to give a lot to make a big difference, built on the motto to give a little everyday. Naturally, I am drawn to like minds and organizations, and the Tipping Bucket is devoted to helping the world using the power of numbers of people with a little bit to give, like a drop in the bucket until it can flow free to those in need. Check out Tipping Bucket and see how as much as $1 can change the world!

We all know that lack of clean water is a huge problem throughout the world. Women spend hours a day fetching water from polluted sources and diseases like dysentery, cholera and typhoid fever spread like wildfire, killing millions of people each year.

The people of Liberia are no stranger to these realities. Struggling to rebuild after years of civil war, this often-overlooked country is now battling water pollution problems. In Liberia alone, hundreds of thousands die each year from water-related illness.

Tipping Bucket’s newest project partner World Hope International is dedicated to bringing clean, potable water to where it’s most needed and they have their sites set on the village of Zinc Camp in Liberia. Zinc Camp is a subsistence farming community of 1,500 people—only growing enough food to sustain their own life. They rely on rain for their crops and they make several trips a day to a distant water source that is polluted and muddy.

But a new well in Zinc Camp means more than just clean water. Read the “plan” tab to see how it impacts the entire community. If you feel moved, do something about it. Go ahead, change the world.

Amount Donated: $5 (to Water is Life via Tipping Bucket)

Day 80: One Drop Foundation

Because it’s important to recognize the blessings that have become so commonplace that we neglect the acknowledge their significance. Being in a country and area with fresh, clean water is so readily available, it’s very easy to overlook the fact that each time we turn on the tap we are blessed. Water gives us life and we need to recognize that not everyone has access to the water they need, so I am supporting ONE DROP as they work to provide all humans access to clean water.

ONE DROP™ believes that water access is an fundamental right. The interdependence of nature and humans means water issues are everyone’s issue. Without water, there is no life on Earth. Water sustains our daily lives, however its distribution and accessibility is not equal around the world. It is therefore our responsibility as human beings to ensure that water is made accessible to everyone, in sufficient quantity and quality, today and tomorrow.

How ONE DROP works

Their capacity to back local partners around the world is measured by the invaluable drops of support from people like you who have chosen to mobilize.

ONE DROP —inspired by the creativity of Cirque du Soleil and its longstanding commitment to community involvement—uses circus, visual and multimedia arts along with folklore, popular theatre, music and dance to encourage change in communities.

In addition to raising awareness of water-related issues by entertaining and educating, ONE DROP works side by side with local partners to improve living conditions of disadvantaged communities through access and responsible use of natural resources, especially water.

ONE DROP™ focuses its efforts on two spectrums:

Developing countries facing urgent water access problems;

Developed countries that have the means to share the wealth, where per-capita water consumption is very high.
